Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the Northumberland New Ventures Band?
A. We are a local group of like-minded adults who enjoy learning to play a musical instrument in a fun, social group setting. We’re also a registered charity (charitable registration number is 831673389RR0001).

Q. Do I have to have experience playing an instrument to join New Ventures Band?
A. No, absolutely no musical experience is required or expected to join the New Ventures Intro Band. All you need is the desire to learn and perform with the band.

Q. Do any of the band members have experience playing an instrument?
A. Most new members have never held an instrument, ever. Others come to the band having played an instrument many years ago in school or elsewhere and are now rekindling that experience. Still others may have played one instrument and now want to broaden their experience by trying another. No matter what your level there is a place for you in New Ventures Band.

Q. How do the band members play together with so many different levels of accomplishment, from complete novice to experienced?
A. We have 3 main bands for you to choose from according to your previous musical experience, if any. You will be accepted into the band that fits your needs where you will be comfortable, either as an aspiring new musician, or someone who has some experience.

Q. What are the band levels and when do they rehearse?
A. Our beginner band (Intro Band) rehearses on Thursday evenings from 6 pm – 7 pm. This band assumes that its members have no musical knowledge and it starts with the basics each September.
Our intermediate band – for those with a little experience, perhaps in high school many years ago – is the Mezzo Band. It rehearses on Thursday evenings from 7 pm – 9 pm.
Our experienced band – the Avanti Band (advanced) rehearses every Wednesday evening from 7 pm – 9 pm.

Q. Where do the bands rehearse?
A. All bands rehearse at 397 Ontario Street (Orange Hall) in Cobourg from September to June.

Q. I’ve never played before. How do I know what instrument to choose?
A. Every September, before our first Wednesday rehearsal, we hold an open house at the rehearsal hall, usually the first Wednesday of September. Every year the event is advertised locally and is posted on our website. At the Open House you have an opportunity to hear members play each of the instruments currently in the band and learn a little about each one. Chat to our members or talk to our band leader, Glenn Bailey to get some help making your decision.

Q. What instruments can I choose from?
A. Instruction is offered in a group setting each week for the following instruments: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, Saxophone (Alto, Tenor or Baritone), Trumpet/Cornet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium/Baritone Horn, Tuba, Electric/String Bass, Percussion and Drums. All instruction is provided by qualified experienced instrumental music teachers (retired).

Q. I don’t have an instrument. Do I have to own one?
A. You will need an instrument to join the band but you don’t need to own one. Many new members rent their instrument until they are sure they have made the right choice. The cost of buying or renting an instrument varies with the instrument chosen. The band continues to purchase some of the more expensive instruments for members to use free of charge. Rentals are available from:
